Casey + Carissa | Fargo Engagement Session

It’s FINALLY spring!! Winter sure held on this year with a grip of ice, but we finally got rid of the last of the snow and ice. Yay! Let the photography season begin!

Starting with Casey + Carissa’s engagement session. You may remember their mini session we did in December to get them a few save the date photos, but now it’s time for a full on photo shoot! The day turned out really windy but Casey and Carissa were both great sports about walking around downtown finding corners with less wind, or waiting for the gusts to slow down in between images.  It actually gave us something to laugh about which is always great for photos. ; )

And every once in a while the wind actually made the photos better! Love this one:

I think the last photo we got was my favorite, just sooo cool!

Thanks for a great session Casey + Carissa! Can’t wait for your wedding in a few months.:)

Fargo Frost | Kris Kandel Photographer

It has been pretty quiet the last few weeks. Not surprising since most people have their weddings in the spring, summer or fall around here. So I’ve been focusing more on behind the scenes work, networking with venues (I’m loving all the venue features that people are sending in!) and also working on a lot of boring stuff like taxes. Not very exciting, so when I got up today and saw the gorgeous frost I grabbed my sister and went out for a quick photoshoot. Just to keep my camera from getting rusty.  ; )  { Click here to see last year’s frosty day photos} It was so fun to do a very relaxed quick shoot for no other reason that I wanted to.

My sis took turns taking photos of me too… isn’t she great with a camera!

I think the one below is my favorite. But it’s hard to pick!

Too much fun! I love the frost, but it will be fantastic to see some green in the world again soon. Here’s to an early spring!!

A Friend’s House Wedding Venue | Kris Kandel Photographer

The next wedding venue in this featured Fargo wedding vendor series is A Friend’s House located on HWY 75 just north of Moorhead. It’s a gorgeous property for outdoor weddings that I’ve had the privileged to photograph twice in the last few summers. * All the photos in this post come from Emily and Ryan’s wedding.

So let’s get into the interview with Bobbi from A Friend’s House!

What makes A Friend’s House unique in the FM area?

The buildings and type of venue make A Friend’s House unique.  The house, built in 1902, is on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.  Receptions often take place by the house, large gazebo and mature willow trees in the front yard.  The little, white, country chapel was built in 1904 and can occupy 50 guests.  Most of our couples opt to have their wedding on the chapel deck and guests outside.  We can accommodate 300 guests that way. Our brides enjoy having their own, private space inside of the cottage.  The charming cottage was a ticket office for the railroad and was built in the 1880′s.  The white, mid-century barn has a loft of twinkling lights and is the location for many dances.

What sort of couples do you absolutely love working with?

We are fortunate to work with so many different couples out here.  Each couple has their own personality and idea.  I enjoy working with all of them.  I love the couples that can go with the flow.  They are upbeat and comfortable with the outdoors.

Is there a new wedding trend that you are excited about?

I’m excited about the mix of colors and patterns.  I’ve seen a lot of couples go out of the box and do their own thing and hope that continues.

One concern I often get from brides is what to do if the weather is bad. What sort of options do you have for couples to ensure their day is perfect even if it rains?

Weather is always a concern for us because the majority of our weddings take place outside.  We have a few different options for our couples.  The loft of our barn is often a great backup.  Setting up white canopies is the preferred option as we are able to place larger groups under canopies.

After working with so many couples and weddings what is one tip you can give to a Bride and Groom that will make their day smoother?

So much planning is involved so don’t sweat the small stuff.

Tripwire | Live Band Interview by Kris Kandel | Fargo Weddings

One of the really fun things about wedding photography is every once in a while I get to hear a live band at the dance. It adds a level of fun that is hard to beat, and Tripwire is one of the best at keeping the energy up there!

Last summer I photographed a wedding where they were the entertainment, but I also had the pleasure of photographing Mark’s wedding (Tripwire’s Drummer), so I had the whole band to work with in the wedding party!

*All the photos in this post are from those two encounters – Jenna and Greg’s wedding where Tripwire lead the wedding dance entertainment. And Mark and Kristen’s wedding  at Rustic Oaks where Tripwire was the ‘best man” – all 3 of them. : )

So let’s get to the questions!

  • What makes Tripwire unique in the FM area? Tripwire is a multi-talented band that plays many different instruments in many genres of music.  We play music for everyone.  No age group will be scared away.  We are four friends who take the stage and have just as much fun as our audience.

  • What sort of couples do you absolutely love working with? We have been very lucky to work with such nice brides and grooms.  As long as they are ready for a great time, we will give it to them.

  • Is there a wedding trend that you are excited about when it comes to wedding dances? The trend that has us excited is that more and more couples are seeking out live bands for their wedding dance entertainment!  It is fun to hear how excited a couple is to have us booked for their wedding and live music really adds a unique touch to a wedding dance.

  • What is your favorite thing about wedding gigs?  It is always fun to be a part of someone’s big day.  With family and friends gathered, we get to end the day of celebration with a party Tripwire style.  Seeing the smiles on the newlyweds’ faces always makes us love our job that much more.

  • After working with so many couples and weddings what is one tip you can give to a Bride and Groom that will make their dance more fun? Relax and enjoy the night!  Talk to people, dance, and enjoy your time with friends and family.  We are just the icing on the wedding dance; the day is all about the happy couple.

  • And the best way to contact you about booking a wedding? We work through a booking agency called:Bitzer Agency at www.bitzeragency.com - (218) 287-2037 {Gary Bitzer}

Thank you Tripwire for the fabulous interview and the fun time at two weddings last season! Here’s hoping we get to work a gig together again in 2013.:)

Adam Brant Wedding Cinematographer | And interview | Kris Kandel Fargo Wedding Photographer

Last Summer at Jill and Darin’s wedding I met a curly haired young man carrying around a Canon camera - Adam Brant who turned out to be the videographer! It was so fun collaborating and chatting in the few slower moments during the day. I found out a few months later that he’s the brother of a dance classmate of mine! Small world. Anyway I asked Adam if he would like to be in my vendor feature series here on the blog!
So without further ado, Adam Brant: Fargo Wedding Videographer!
*All photos taken by Me at Jill and Darin’s wedding.
What makes your videography unique in the Fargo Moorhead area?

I’m unique to the Fargo area because I’ve actually been through 5 years
of film school, unlike the other videographers in town. I’ve been
trained how to film and edit things on a professional level. I
actually like to call myself a cinematographer and not videographer
because I try to shoot my weddings with a cinematic eye.

*See Adam at work in the photo below!

What sort of couples do you absolutely love working with?

I enjoy to work with couples that aren’t afraid to have fun infront
of a camera. Your wedding day is special and being relaxed in front of
the camera will make a better video!

Is there a wedding trend that you are excited about?

I really like to see live bands at wedding receptions. I know it’s a thing of the past, but the BEST weddings are the ones with live
music.

Why should couples invest in a good cinematographer?

You should invest in a good videographer for the simple fact that
the way people move describes so much
about a person. If you watch some of my past videos, pay
attention to how a person smiles or gives a hug and you can almost
feel like your there with them. You need to be careful who you hire,
just because they charge a lot doesn’t mean they’re good.

After working with so many couples and weddings what is one tip you
can give to a Bride and Groom?

The best advice I could give is that I have never ever ever seen a
wedding day go perfectly as planned. Almost every wedding gets a
little behind on schedule so leave some breathing room and know in
advance that if something goes unplanned it’s perfectly normal.

And the best way to contact you?

The best way would be to email me from my website
adambrantweddings.com or simply call me at 701-799-5709

Here’s the video that Adam made for Darin and Jill. You can spot me and my team working in several of the shots which is pretty cool!!

Thank you Adam for the fun interview! I hope your 2013 season is filling up well, and maybe I’ll have the pleasure of working with you again!

Rustic Oaks | Venue Feature | Kris Kandel Fargo Wedding Photographer

It is the slow time of year for wedding photographers in Fargo, too cold and miserable! So as I was thinking about what to do with my blog over the winter months I decided to spend some time spotlighting and interviewing vendors/venues that I’ve worked with and loved over the last few years! It’s always great to be able to share the best in the wedding business!!

The first to respond to my emails and questions was Rustic Oaks (which just proves they are organized and on top of things!).

So here we go: Rustic Oaks Wedding Venue - questions answered by the fabulous Emily!!

*All photos taken by Me at Kristen and Mark’s wedding last July.

  • How did the Rustic Oaks dream start up?

The vision and inspiration came from Anne and Dave Larson; they deserve all of the credit!  However, I am honored to say that I have been part of the Rustic Oaks journey from the beginning!  Long story short: My husband and I had both been working for the Larsons at Anytime Fitness; that’s where Ryan and I first met!  In January 2010 we got engaged.  After hearing the news of our engagement, Anne and Dave showed us their property (the future home of Rustic Oaks) and offered to host our wedding!  We immediately fell in love with the venue and their vision for Rustic Oaks; I also fell in love with the idea of working out there!  I figured I had nothing to lose – so days after our first visit to the venue, I presented a job proposal (and invited myself along for the ride)!  They’ve been stuck with me ever since!

  • What makes Rustic Oaks unique in the FM area?

Oh wow…where should I start!?  We are unique in so many ways!  Rustic Oaks is primarily an outdoor venue and I believe the opportunity to celebrate in congruence with nature is truly special.  The beauty and serenity of the property make it such a magical (and peaceful) place to get married.  Also, we are starting to be recognized as the “home of the weekend wedding.”  We rent the whole venue for entire weekend; our couples can do everything in one place: rehearsal and groom’s dinner on Friday…ceremony, reception and dance on Saturday…and gift opening and/or brunch on Sunday; the bridal party and family can stay right on site in the Rustic Oaks Inn!  We take pride in event exclusivity and flexibility.  Other unique aspects: our beautifully renovated barn, the 900 sq. ft. deck that overlooks the river, pontoon cruises, campfires, the vast amount of gardens/prairie/and wildflowers, and so much more!  And we are definitely “growing our dream in 2013!”  We are doubling the size of the barn, we added another inn/more overnight accommodations to the venue, and we will be open year-round.

  • What sort of couples do you typically work with?

Awesome ones!  I have to compliment all of our clients, as I truly feel we get to work with some of the most quality and charming couples!  I also love the fact that clients are attracted to Rustic Oaks for a variety of reasons; we attract couples that are environmentally friendly, or outdoorsy, or country…we get couples that feel more spiritual when they’re surrounded by nature…we draw interest from clients who want outdoor elegance…we attract clients looking for a venue that’s more simple, relaxed, and serene…and we definitely attract clients that are simply “looking for something unique.”

  • A constant concern I come across from brides is what do do if the weather is bad. How do you handle rainy/cold/hot days with an outdoor venue?

We always pre-plan for “Plan A” and “Plan B;” at the final consultation we help design a diagram for best and worst case scenarios – so the couple can feel confident about the flow of their wedding day – regardless of the weather!  We also try to make honest recommendations about how many guests we like to host during the various seasons/times of year; we never want to try to host more guests than we can do a really good job with.  Lastly – especially once the barn addition is done – we feel like we have a variety of ways we can lay out a ceremony and/or reception in case of inclement weather.  The majority of our spaces are also temperature controlled.  Finally, we realize that the weather in Fargo-Moorhead is often unpredictable; so although I always remind couples that “the important thing is, you’re going to get married” – we also want the couple and their guests to be very comfortable, to have peace of mind, and for the day to run smooth!

  • Tell me a little bit about the exciting new additions to Rustic Oaks, and how these will benefit future couples!

2013 will be an exciting year at Rustic Oaks! The historic Nokken House was recently added to the venue (which will give us more overnight accommodations) and the Rustic Oaks Barn is about to double in size (adding new bathrooms, a bar, kitchen, wheelchair lift, and more usable guest space on the upper level). These new additions will allow us to host weddings and events year-round!  As we continue to grow our business, we hope to make exciting and positive changes that reflect our dream venue: a place for families and friends to gather, grow as people, relax, be creative and celebrate in congruence with nature. Throughout the renovation and building process we will continue to document the progression and will be sharing the journey with you on facebook and our website!

  • What are some tips you can give to a Bride and Groom that will help them pick their venue?

When it comes time to plan your wedding and find a location - choose the venue that offers your “must-haves” and that feels the most special, magical, and peaceful.  Seek out an atmosphere that makes you feel joy and happiness.  You should also make sure it’s a place that offers you and their guests a lot of fun and flexibility.  Finally, I feel that it’s important for you to choose your venue as a team; both the bride and groom should feel the magic of the venue!  And in my opinion, knowing you’ve found the perfect wedding venue – should be a lot like knowing you’re in love – you will just feel it!

  • And the best way to contact you…

I encourage anyone who’s even slightly curious about our venue to get in contact with me; I love taking couples on personalized tours, chatting on the phone, connecting via email, meeting for coffee, etc!  I truly feel that we have something special to offer everyone at Rustic Oaks!  Our website, email address, and phone number all go to me; and I absolutely love working with new couples, so don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Thank you to Emily at Rustic Oaks for the fantastic interview! It’s so fun to get to know these venues better, I can’t wait to photograph another wedding there soon! Be sure to check out more photos from Mark and Kristens Wedding Here  to see how they used the gorgeous property!!
